Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
What is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional bowel disorder, which means that there are no proven bowel abnormalities. IBS is a motility and sensory problem, i.e. the motor function of the bowel is disordered.
Studies have shown that people with IBS suffer from hypervigilance. Unfortunately, routine medical treatment proves to be unsatisfactory. Long term scientific studies, based on the groundbraking work by Prof. P.J. Whorwell*, show that forms of psychotherapy, such as hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, or a combination of both, significantly improve symptoms.
Symptoms
The symptoms of IBS could differ from person to person, but the prevaling symptoms are abdominal pain in combination with constipation and/or diarrhoea.
Cause
The cause of IBS is unknown, although studies have shown that stress and anxiety worsen symptoms.
Diagnosis
Previous to treatment, the diagnosis 'IBS' should always be confirmed by your gastroenterologist, internist or GP. I will ask you to bring a referral at the outset of treatment.
Hypnotherapy
The treatment of IBS includes hypnotherapy and visualization. Clinical hypnotherapy is NOT the same as stage hypnosis. It is a safe form of therapy, which has been succesfully applied to a multitude of disorders. Scientific studies have shown that at least 80% of people with IBS report significant improvement of symptoms after treatment with hypnotherapy. Long term studies have shown maintenance of results even at five years posttreatment.
Treatment
Treatment will comprise about 6 - 8 sessions. Your first visit is a consultation - you'll get the opportunity to tell me about your complaints. I will explain a bit about the workings of the gastrointestinal tract. I will also elucidate any questions on the subject of hypnotherapy. After the first consultation you will have some time to decide if hypnotherapy is something for you. If you decide for hypnotherapy, we will agree on a certain schedule of treatment for you and plan the first sessions.
At the outset of treatment the focus is on reduction of symptoms. During treatment, you will learn techniques to positively influence the movements of your bowel, which will consequently result in relief of symptoms. You will also be taught how to apply self hypnosis; it will enable you to treat yourself at home and, what's more, it will speed up results. You will experience what the mind-body connection means. It is important to realize that, during hypnotherapy sessions, you will always be in complete control.

Costs
Treatment will comprise about 6 - 8 sessions, one session per fortnight. The costs will be € 75,- per session. Several insurance companies indemnify costs, but in order to be sure, I advise you to contact your insurance company.
